Thomas started his intellectual property career in 2003 as an European Patent Office examiner in The Hague, Netherlands, in a directorate in charge of computer implemented inventions and business methods. His responsibilities included searching and examining European patent applications, which often required his participation as member or chairman of examining divisions in a significant number of oral proceedings.
In 2008, Thomas transitioned to the private sector, joining a Swiss firm as consultant; his diverse client base included independent inventors, multinational companies, SMEs, start-ups and research institutes. In 2013, he passed the European Qualifying Examination and became a registered professional representative before the European Patent Office.
Thomas is skilled to deal with inventions across various technical fields, including electronics, electrical engineering, communications systems, IT, information networks, watchmaking, smart homes, as well as the paper and materials industries. His skills range from rights acquisition (protection strategies, patentability analysis, drafting patent applications, prosecution, freedom of operate studies), corporate partnerships (negotiations and licensing/disposal agreements) and EPO appeals and opposition procedures.
In 2016, Thomas founded TR-IP Consulting in Switzerland, which provides intellectual property consulting services to a local and international clientele, especially with respect to patents, trademarks and designs. In early 2017, Thomas joined the ALATIS network, reinforcing the network’s presence in Switzerland.
